you need to get yourself a multi-skilled mate who's done pretty much everything there is to do in life.

Sold..... I wasnt referring to you or your mate fella, as he obviously sorted you out as mates should.
It was more to stress not to use any old mate to do the work as he could really come unstuck.
I doubt very much the OP has the luxury of a mate at Pimlico hence posting here.

Re: Any plumbers on here?
Plumbers are the biggest pain in the arse workers on any site, over paid, and full of there own self importance. Charge stupid money, But looking on the bright side most youngsters are now training to be plumbers, as its a lot easier than Electrics. So should be an influx soon, and the old boys can fuck right off!!

Re: Any plumbers on here?
It's not as simple as getting a mate to strip out your old boiler, going to the merchants and buying a new boiler and sticking it on the wall and away you go. Yes it's possible but it ain't the right way to do it.

Was for us.... maybe we was just lucky... or maybe my mate did not screw us over??

Re: Any plumbers on here?
So £1300 of the £3500 covers the boiler, yes ? Did the plumber tell you that or did you Google the make and model of the boiler to get that price ?

What about the flue ? Is it a standard horizontal flue or a vertical flue that requires extra fitting's, extension pieces and a weathering kit ? A big difference and will add £'s

Is the boiler being relocated to a different position in the house ?

What about other materials such as pipe, fittings and valves ?

Does the price include magnetic limefighter (as you are having a combi)

Does the price include a magnetic filter ? It should be fitted and with some manufacturers they will extend the warranty if it is.

Does the price include replacing control's, such as a programmer & thermostat and TRV's ? (has your 25 year old system even got these and if so, what condition are they in ?)
And what about flushing and inhibitor chemicals ?
All these are essential to comply with building regs and enable the gas safe registered engineer to issue you with a compliant certificate and if not done could invalidate any guarantee.

All the above will have a significant factor on the price and without doubt increase the £1300. It's not as simple as getting a mate to strip out your old boiler, going to the merchants and buying a new boiler and sticking it on the wall and away you go. Yes it's possible but it ain't the right way to do it.

Re: Any plumbers on here?
Had the same done in Chelmsford last month, cost £2700 all in , combi, parts & labour etc. Took 4 days.

Plumbers have got so much work on they chuck silly quotes out and if one sticks they'll drop another customer who isn't paying as much.

Re: Any plumbers on here?
my MATE charged £2200 to install a new boiler. british gas quoted me £4500....

Re: Any plumbers on here?
For plumbers, factor in the following RIDER contract.

1. Meal out with Mrs £150
2. Toys for kids £200
3. Down payment on tri annual holidays £500

You won't be far off £4500

Oh my MATE worked for Pimlico at the time... I obviously never got charged Pimlico prices...

Re: Any plumbers on here?
Good point about it being winter... Problem is I'm paying almost £200 a month at the moment on gas because the boiler is so bloody inefficient.

Sold - that was the sort of approach I was thinking. Few days work plus £1,200 for the boiler. If there are genuinely no other costs other than boiler and labour, then the all in price should (at most) be £2k!

Re: Any plumbers on here?
MATE ripped out our old system... took the tank and all me copper pipes in the loft... shoved in a new Combi (Baxi) fitted it all up... think it was £1100 all in... £600 for the boiler and £500 for the fitting... took him 2.5 days... oh and he got a bit of dosh back on all me copper pipes and the old tank

Re: Any plumbers on here?
My entire system has gone (old air flow shite) so am getting a new one.

The stupid quotes you're getting at the moment are because it's winter.

I've been quoted £4,200 for what I need done and in the same week my dad got a plumber in for something, who said he could do mine for 2k if I waited until the summer.

Basically the missus is having to sit under a duvet, as we still have hot water and I never need heating anyway as am continually hot.

Plumber who is cheaper and who I know a few people trust (gave my dad his number) is in Basildon, so can get you his number if you want Andy.

Re: Any plumbers on here?
If you replace a boiler from an old system the new boiler requires, in order to satisfy its guarantee, a power flush to be carried out on the existing radiator system. This in itself is a day's work. Don't forget either that each of the rads will require a thermostatic valve to be fitted. Sounds like a good week's work if carried out properly.
